The History Of Painting
It has fascinated we humans for more than 20,000 years. Evidence survives in early cave paintings and that the ancient Chinese probably manufactured and perfected paint many thousands of years ago. The ancient Egyptians considered color to have magical and healing properties and paint making became an art form. Color was further developed with Greek and Crete innovations and the Romans absorbed these skills. It was between 600 BC-AD 400 that the Greeks and Romans introduced varnishes.
Aztec Indians valued red dye more than gold and both the Indians and Chinese practiced Color Healing. All civilizations have employed color to adorn their societies both publicly and privately. Yet none of the world’s civilizations has named many colors. Of 98 languages studied, the highest number of basic color terms was to be found in English - where we have eleven: black, white, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, grey and brown. The other millions of colors have 'borrowed' names, based on examples of them, such as pear, wine, apricot, rose, turquoise, and of course the color of your choice.
